San Diego - San Diego State right-hander Mike Moat has been selected the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance in the Aztecs' 5-0 win over 20th-ranked South Alabama last Thursday in the team's home opener.
Moat, from Longmont, Colo. (Niwot HS), scattered three hits (including a bad-hop infield single) over eight innings of work while striking out nine and walking none. He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. South Alabama had runners in scoring position on three occasions with less than two outs, but Moat retired the Jaguars each time to preserve the shutout.
In the process, he evened his season record at 1-1 while lowering his team-leading earned run average to 0.47. In 19 innings, he has allowed one earned run while striking out 18 and walking only three.
The Aztecs (5-5), winners of five of their last six, travel to Florida this week to take on the nationally ranked Miami Hurricanes in a three-game series beginning Friday (Feb. 21).
