Tennessee Baseball Golf Tournament, Alumni Game Set for This Weekend

Nov. 4, 2004

KNOXVILLE -- Numerous former Tennessee baseball lettermen will be in town this weekend to take part in the fourth annual Food City All-Star Golf Tournament Friday at Three Ridges Golf Club and the 2004 Tennessee Alumni Game Saturday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Friday's golf tournament, which tees off at 8:30 a.m. and benefits the Volunteers' baseball program, features numerous current and former major leaguers with Rocky Top roots. Knoxville native Todd Helton (1993-95) , the 1995 SEC and NCAA Player of the Year, is slated to hit the links just days after receiving his third Gold Glove as an All-Star member of the Colorado Rockies.

Other active major leaguers scheduled to appear include 2001 SEC Player of the Year and Houston Astros infielder Chris Burke (1999-2001), St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Mike Lincoln (1996) and Astros manager Phil Garner (1968-70).

Former All-America shortstop and current Tennessee Assistant AD Condredge Holloway (1973-75) will also be in attendance Friday, as will many other former Vols.

The tournament will be played under a five-man scramble format, with one celebrity to be included in each group. Event sponsors include Food City, NewsTalk 99 WNOX, the Knoxville News Sentinel, BB&T, Gourmet's Market and Chick-fil-A.

Then Saturday morning at 10, a host of former lettermen will gather on the diamond at Lindsey Nelson Stadium for their annual alumni game. Players from as far back as the 1940s will team up with recent UT players such as Javi Herrera (2001-03) for a few innings of fun and competition.

Admission to the alumni game is free and fans are encouraged to attend.
