Summit League Preview
Western Illinois won the regular season a year ago, and with six starters and three pitchers back from last year's team, the Westerwinds can only improve on last season's 23-23 finish. Last year's Coach of the Year, Holly Van Vlymen, has three first-team all-league players to look to for leadership. Senior outfielder Britt Mason led the team in hitting last season with a .344 average, while fellow senior infielder Samantha Valentine was not far behind at .333. Junior pitcher Kamren Ferguson, last season's Summit League Pitcher of the Year, returns to the circle for her junior year with a 2.11 ERA and 117 strikeouts to her name. As if that arsenal was not enough, last year's League Newcomer of the Year is back for the Westerwinds after hitting .339 as only a freshman. Western Illinois has all the tools in place to return to the top of the conference in 2008.
